no-carbsWhenever you hear the famous term “weight loss”, you’ll always hear about low carb diets and low carb meals, recipes, and etc. Some people would rather avoid the use of these words altogether. Others would say you just need to adjust your eating behaviors and make better lifestyle choices. For decades, there have been hundreds of debates over the most beneficial methods for weight loss and dieting. On this blog, I will offer you some information that may adjust how you view low carb diets altogether.

It is important to realize that most of your popular diets work to help you lose weight. The Atkins diet, South Beach Diet, and the Zone do a great job although they have dramatically different levels for carb allowances. Atkins provides a very low carb plan, South Beach allows more access to carbs, and the Zone Diet is more carb friendly with higher allowances (40% of total calorie intake) than the other two. One factor that is common amongst all three diet programs is that it creates a calorie deficit state that allows fat to be burned. Since this is the case, there is no definite winner in the weight loss war because all of them provide a calorie deficit condition which is necessary for weight loss.

Everyone attempting to lose weight should understand that the entire purpose of weight loss is to burn excess fat while keeping the metabolism strong. This means that metabolic responses along with hormones are important in this overall process. One such hormone that is important in controlling the metabolism is leptin. When there are increased concentrations of this hormone in the body, it results in an increase in the body’s metabolism. Studies have shown that having low carb diets, all the time, can drop leptin levels, which results in a lowering of the metabolism. This is the reason why many diet programs are adding “cheat” meals, like ice cream, pizza, tacos, etc. that will reset your body so that leptin can be in higher concentrations.

So, with that being said, a very low carb approach may work for one person, and it could be an absolute disaster for another person if they don’t consider certain factors. There are multiple factors, like activity levels, daily energy levels, and insulin resistance, which can help you determine the type of diet that is best for you. Since these factors vary from person to person, you may have to test certain low carb diets to see which one is best for you.
